As soon as you hear the opening line “I must obey, your love is supernatural,” lead singer Aaron Starkie’s vocal tone sends you to the higher register of the late musical hero David Bowie’s famously alternative voice, on The Slow Reader’s Club’s new single from their recently released third album “Build a Tower.” With a direct and haunting lyrical concept about the way love eventually becomes an obsession, the same way that infatuation can make you feel as though you are addicted to someone else and you quite simply can’t break free of that feeling, and an overall music production that throws you back to The Temper Trap’s 2008 hit single “Sweet Disposition” and The National’s beautiful 2014 song “I Need My Girl,” ROUGH ONLINE has decided that “Supernatural” is without a doubt the best Indie Rock track we have heard all year.
The masterfully produced muted guitar riff and the mid-tempo, military snare-style drum beat is enough to grab your attention from the start, a very slick groove which continues throughout up until the middle 8 section. The chorus is a stunning, cool breeze of fresh air due to the use of earthy reverb on both the guitar parts and Starkie’s vocals, which along with his notable use of resonance that soars, you are reminded of the clear but edgy voice of Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan, because of Aaron’s powerful high register, solely performed using his chest-voice, while he sings “so I pour my heart out, surrender all too easy.” It is a vocal performance which stands out from most others that Rough Online has heard since the beginning of the year.
Supernatural’s official music video delivers a simple yet effective concept of contemporary dancers performing an emotive routine in either an empty studio or a rooftop, which responds nicely to the music, and this is psychedelically edited in with footage of The Slow Reader’s Club performing the song. However, the overall stealer of the show has to be the catchy, memorable guitar riff that will without a doubt make you want to repeat “Supernatural” again and again and again. Basically, Rough Online love, love, love this track, and if My Chemical Romance ever decided to take their music in a less distorted direction, and take the overdrive-effected guitars out of the picture, it would probably sound a little something like this.
