Laura Kidd, professionally known as She Makes War is tearing up Bristol with her throwback to Riot Grrl and female-fronted Alt-Rock bands like Garbage and Bitch Alert on her new single “Devastate Me,” taken from her forthcoming debut album “Brace For Impact” out September 28th. The new UK queen of Grunge is hell-bent on making as much joyful noise as possible, from the very first second of the song when the thickest set of live drums are hit, alongside a rhythm guitar with the utmost overuse of distortion and overdrive, and a dirty, gritty bass line, all together making you want to instantly body bang your arse off in order to get the frustration out of your system in the best possible way.
Unpredictably so, her softer side, reminiscent of the famously fragile Rock vocal of Liz Phair but with a slight British twang, is delivered in the verse sections, toying with you as you anticipate how loud She Makes War will eventually get, on a track that cleverly experiments with tempo by following an unusual 6 by 4 time signature. And the chorus is exactly how we expect it to be…loud and proud, with long-held notes that weirdly slide down the scale, a vocally eccentric technique that with her effeminate voice lovingly contradicts the anger of the music, as she sings “disappear so quietly, devastate me.”
It’s even easy to assume that ROUGH ONLINE’s new favourite Alt-Rock artist is inspired by the visuals of Courtney Love as similarly to the artwork of Hole’s classic 1994 record “Live Through This,” where a photograph of “innocent” Love when she was a child is seen on the back sleeve and then a raw picture of a woman emotionally accepting her award at a beauty pageant was used as the famous official front cover, She Makes War gives us a rough image of a girl blowing out candles on a birthday cake, assumed to be Laura Kidd herself. Either way, Rough Online are very impressed by the art of She Makes War, a music artist who we are pretty certain has the potential to go as musically dark as Jack Off Jill.
