ROUGH ONLINE are very impressed by the eclectic music of Libby Whitehouse…a new star-in-the-making, who has recently dropped her debut E.P “Feels” which combines so many different styles of Popular Music, it’s hard to keep up. Joking, of course…the result is pure perfection and here are the reasons why. Libby’s new record opens with the Funky “New Boy” which, while throwing us back vocally to the Dance sound of Kiesza, also reminds us of many 80’s hits we still feel nostalgic listening to because of New Boy’s Prince-esque synths performed in the chorus above a classic, R&B Pop beat…in other words, Rough Online love love love this track. Along with Libby’s chopped-up vocal of the words “you say, you, you, you say,” a production style and technique reminiscent of UK Garage, it is fair to say that Whitehouse’s “New Boy” is an absolute tune and it’s because of songs like this that Libby has ensured she will never be associated with the complacent sound of current radio, but instead will undoubtedly be more compared to other Alternative Urban acts such as Janelle Monae’.

Superbly, Libby continues the nostalgia of UK Garage with track 2 “Rewind,” which instantly throws you back to Sweet Female Attitude’s 2000 hit single “Flowers.” Strangely, Libby’s vocal tone is more reminiscent of singer and songwriter Birdy than any Urban act out there, and surprisingly it works alongside the raw Garage production, while she sings those Katy B-esque melodies in the chorus sections masterfully, via the memorable lyrics “rewind back to when it was easy, nights sitting watching the TV.” Whitehouse is blatantly keeping things real, fresh and British with songs like “Rewind.” On the other hand, track 3 “I Know What You Like,” although in its’ opening presents the listener with a beautiful chord structure, performed on the piano, soon enough delivers an overall Trap-influenced production in the chorus, after them harshly hammered violins have been played in the bridge sections. And if you thought that “I Know What You Like” was an unexpected move from the new Popstar, “Chasing The Rush” will instantly throw you with its’ unpredictable live sound of Funk Rock fused with Soul, masterfully performed by Libby and her band. All that’s left to say is…wow. From all of us at Rough Online…Libby, you’ve really outdone yourself with your new E.P and you should be very proud of what you have accomplished. Rough hopes to see Libby Whitehouse perform very soon. She is definitely one to look out for. The E.P “Feels” drops November 14th.
