So what would it sound like if M.I.A decided randomly to record an album far away from her usual political views and socially-charged concepts and instead leant more towards a tongue-in-cheek, comedic persona which wreaks of sass and silly humour…you asked for it…meet Cherryade, an Electro Pop duo that have taken Rough on one hell of a ride with their new mini-album “Fractured Fairytales” named after one of their singles, which recently saw a re-release featuring cockney, crossdressing, Grime artist…the fabulous Karnage Kills, who literally kills the track with his MC skills while Ella raps those gangsta’ lyrics “ he said he’ll love me ever after if I work and call him master, I said ‘fuck that bitch, I’m done’ then I shot him with my gun” in a throwback-Lady Sovereign-esque vocal tone over noughties Diplo-sounding production, featuring a Reggaeton beat, alarming, loud keyboard sounds and the memorable hook “break when ya know cause’ I hammer that tone.”

Although Track 3 “Get By” dishes up a colourful production of bright synths, the minor chord structure gives the song a sinister contradiction, consisting of Industrial-esque Drum Kits that at times feel as though Alex of Cherryade wants to take you into Knife Party-territory, fused with Cher Lloyd’s playful sound, specifically the Pop vibe from her 2011 single “With Ur Love,” as Ella sings a catchy melody to the lyrics “get by, get by, do what I gotta’ do to get by.” And it’s no wonder that “Got You Good” was released as a single to promote their debut body of work, because of its’ fusion of Tropical House and Bhangra Music, the Rihanna-esque backing vocals “na-na-na” that make you dance your arse off the same way we all did when we Riri’s “S&M” came out in 2011, along with one killer Dupstep-inspired chorus, which includes Bongo Drum percussion and Ella’s unusual, nasal-sounding voice reminiscent of Nelly Furtado.

It’s not like Cherryade don’t give off a Kesha-vibe anyway, but if you don’t hear it prior you will definitely pick up on it when you hear the sass of “Blah, Blah” in which its’ tinny Dance beat and funky, Ibiza bass line throws you back to Calvin Harris’s 2016 UK hit single “This Is What You Came For,” and Track 6 “My Town” is just an absolute burst of eccentricity, containing hilarious, random lyrics like “I smashed a bottle, robbed a bank, I killed a swan and had a wank” which is enough on its’ own to make you lol and also wonder where the hell Ella got these made ideas from, as you are thrown back to Charli XCX’s critically acclaimed vocal performance on Icona Pop’s 2012 UK Number 1 single “I Love It.” “The Crown” on the other hand…is Rough Online’s favourite song of Cherryade’s to date, so much that we have had it on repeat all week, while throwing shapes to the ole-skool Prodigy-sounding synths as well as Ella’s Lily Allen-eat-your-heart persona on the chorus as she sings “if ya looking for trouble then she’ll bring you down,” as well as other memorable lyrics like “aint hard when you’re living for the weekend, aint hard when you’re sucking on his bellend” concluding that Ella is definitely without a doubt one of the best Pop song writers on the music scene right now. Cherryade’s awesome debut comes to a close with the multiple-hitting cowbells of “Houdini” which showcases a vintage synth from the Gershon Kingsely 1969 classic instrumental “Popcorn,” similarly used in Mykki Blanco’s “Haze Boogie Life,” while Track 9 “Empress” is as ghetto as it gets for London’s newest Synth-Pop duo. You would be an absolute fool to not stream or download “Fractured Fairytales,” so don’t waste any time and ensure to have just as much fun as Rough Online had listening to it.
