Trap has become one of the biggest musical trends in the industry today, as demonstrated on Vera’s new single “Bottoms Up,” only the Swedish newcomer has put her own distinctive, less-aggressive spin on the genre in comparison to your usual Riri tune, such as 2013’s “Pour It Up,” by opening the song with a synth reminiscent of the calm keyboard sounds performed by Anne Lennox on her 1992 track “The Gift” from her classic album “Diva,” as well as singing with in an unusual, clear, slightly raspy tone that sends you into a Dream-like state. The bridge delivers a great build-up with the use of conceptual “Drunk-In-Love” lyrics “I’ve been drinking ‘bout you, drinking ‘bout you, drinking ‘bout you, I’ve been thinking ‘bout you,” leading into a hook that throws us back to Beyonce’s self-titled era, specifically songs like “7/11,” as Vera seduces us with the words “bottoms up I did it again, did it again, did it again, nothing can sober me up, sober me up, sober me up,” making you and your partner get just that little bit more intimate at the club while having her new single playing in the background.
The official music video matches the musical vibe of “Bottoms Up,” perfectly, which begins with the singer sitting in a car during the evening, yelling words you cannot hear as the audio has been purposefully muted for you to guess why Vera is in such a rage, and cleverly cuts to that morning where the Swedish beauty awakens amongst a group of her friends, as if recovering from last night’s rave. Throughout the day the party slowly increases once again with the use of beer drinking and edited close-ups of Vera singing away to the camera, which soon develops into a visual of multi-coloured lights, graffiti walls, selfies, and eventually ends the same way the surreal, captivating music video begun, with the singer sitting in her car, only this time with a content smile on her face. ROUGH ONLINE without a doubt are very intrigued by this new artist and judging by her song writing skills it would be no surprise if one day in the very near future we see her name on the credits of tracks written for mainstream singers such as Rihanna or Charli XCX. “Bottoms Up” is available now on download and stream from all online stores.
