“Bathtub” is an intriguing slow-tempo, Electro track, simply because there are many unanswered questions, due to the song’s ambiguous lyrics and Iselin’s unusual vocal performance, yet radio-ready Pop music production. Either way, Iselin has most certainly got ROUGH’s attention which is never a bad thing when you are just starting out in the industry, therefore, ROUGH have given a huge thumbs up to the release of this extremely chilled Indie-Pop song, which takes on a similar sound to Taylor Swift’s “So It Goes,” with its atmospheric synths and Cher Lloyd’s “With Ur Love” due to Bathtub’s bouncy bass line which keeps the rhythm going nicely.
Despite Iselin’s sultry, breathy vocal, she still has sass which you feel in her “teasy” tone and nature, similar to recent Pop singer Bebe Rexha. And that catchy Bridge prepares us for the chorus nicely as Iselin sings “I don’t need no drama, na, na, na, I’m gonna’ keep it simple, la, la, la,” in a Rihanna-style melody, but leaves the listener confused about whether or not she is using the concept of a Bathtub as a sexual metaphor, or the factual desire for Escapism away from everyday problems and drama. Either way, the relaxing production definitely responds well to the concept, especially when the chorus kicks in and her vocals are sent to a robotic world, with the overuse of autotune and a flange-effect, reminiscent of Allie X’s vocal performance on the critically acclaimed “Need You.” Overrall, “Bathtub” is a great Pop track, with the potential of becoming an Indie hit with a cult following. Think a more chilled version of Charli XCX’s “boys” and you know what to expect from Iselin’s brand new single, and ROUGH ONLINE is very curious as to what the Norwegian diva will release next.
