YES, YES and big-time YES…Dutch dance producers Kris Kross Amsterdam and The Boy Next Door have teamed up with singer Connor Maynard to release one of this summer’s biggest bangers “Whenever,” which perfectly samples Colombian diva Shakira’s major-breakthrough hit “Whenever Wherever,” against a Major Lazer-esque Electro music production. It’s the full package of radio-friendly Dance Pop you need to bring the current UK heatwave to its climax, with the use of a Diplo-influenced Tropical House sound, including Arabic-influenced synths in the instrumental sections after each chorus, a xylophone played off-beat from the kick in the second verse to give it that notable Dance rhythm, as well as an electric guitar performing closed, one -off strums of the chords in the middle 8 section just to rock things up a little bit before the beat drops in its’ finale where Connor sings in his higher register, used as a beautiful, reverb-effected backing vocal.
However, the DJ duo do not want “Whenever” to steer too far away from the original, by cleverly using an up-to-date Flute-synth for Shakira’s memorable hook from her 2001 single, right after the chorus breaks down the overall production so that all you hear is the simplicity of Connor’s slick, smooth Pop vocal singing that chorus we have loved for years “whenever, wherever, we’re meant to be together, I’ll be there and you’ll be near and that’s the deal my dear” to an atmospheric synth in the background. Kriss Kross Amsterdam and The Boy Next Door have basically put their 21st century stamp on the Shakira hit, and have done it superbly.
The official music video adds to the heatwave visually with the use of people having fun in the sunshine, playing sports, or as little as living their everyday lives by the beach while Connor performs in front of graffiti walls and skyscraper buildings. It delivers the summer vibe of “Whenever” perfectly, so much that both the single and its’ official music video have chart success written all over it. ROUGH ONLINE is hoping to hear more collaborations, consisting of well-produced samples, from the duo in the near future. Kriss Kross Amsterdam and The Boy Next Door have for sure joined the list of credible tracks which have sampled throwback songs, alongside last year’s 2017 smash hit collaboration between DJ Khaled, Rihanna and Bryson Tiller “Wild Thoughts.”
