Beginning with a conversation between two people discussing the characteristics of their ideal soul mate, a low-quality audio recording that throws us back to the interludes of Lauryn Hill on the classic “Miseducation” album, at first glance, conceptually the narrative of “Vuyo’s Woman” may appear to some as a cliché, but it is so much more than that after the very first listen. Vuyo uses many methods, via the track’s unusual music production, to ensure that you will get lost in what the rapper classes as the best form of procrastination…love

With his Drake-esque voice, Vuyo samples the Destiny’s Child 1999 hit single “Say My Name,” in a much less lively way, and transforms what was a powerful, female anthem into an unexpected, unique, stripped-back rendition, using his monotone style, so relaxing that it sends you into a dreamlike state. Vuyo uses a snippet of his own vocal on this track and reverses it to make it sound like a weird, trippy synth which is intentionally played slightly off beat from the drum programming, that is also slightly played out of sync from his vocal performance, which gives the track an unsettling edge similar to the production of Trip-Hop artist Tricky, whilst maintaining a very chilled, lo-fi vibe like the sounds of YouTube Alternative R&B singer Corbin AKA Spooky Black. All of these experimental production qualities are what makes “Vuyo’s Woman” appealing to the ear and showcases Vuyo’s distinctive Hip-Hop sound that I’m sure we’ll hear more of very soon.
