While most male singers in the music industry today are following the vocal trends of Ed Sheeran and Hosier, Brett Denman is bringing something a little different to the industry, with a voice almost more reminiscent of the quirky, Indie talents of throwback Liz Phair and musically the Rock N’ Roll, “Electric” Country sound of Sheryl Crow, specifically from her 1996 self-titled era, with the occasional raw phrasing of Courtney Love, when Denman drops down the key he is meant to be in at the end of each line. Either way, Brett is most certainly not delivering anything current or conventional here, and Rough Online praise him for his fearlessness and authenticity as a singer and songwriter who has recently released the single “Here’s Looking At You Kid” from his new E.P (of the same name), his follow-up to the E.P “Let’s…” which was released earlier this year…in other words, Brett’s been a busy boy, working with critically acclaimed producer Dan Wilson, who ROUGH ONLINE are surprised to have seen in the credits for being Denman’s recent collaborator on his new portfolio work, when comparing the sound with Wilson’s most famous partner in crime, the multi-talented Adele.
The memorable riff and chord progression will, strangely enough, throw you back to the famous, 1969 Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg duet “Je T’aime, Moi Non Plus,” and the slickly performed guitar delivers that same Folk Pop sound we loved listening to on Lene Marlin’s one-hit wonder single “Sitting Down Here” from 1999, and let’s not forget its’ psychedelic element of a sparkly, 80’s influenced Synth that drops in just before the ear-grabbing lyrics “here’s looking at you k-k-k-k-k-kid.” It’s basically a very refreshing song to listen to amongst all the complacent Country and Folk singers of today and a great way to continue his already well-achieving career since the North Californian singer’s 2007 debut album. Brett Denman’s new E.P “Here’s Looking At You Kid” is out now on all online stores.
