In just a few words…Ruen is the best Rock artist of the year and here are the reasons why. Rock N’ Roll hasn’t sounded this awesome since the “Globe Sessions” era of Sheryl Crow’s career, evidenced on Ruen’s new single “What I Need,” which opens with a closed, Electric rhythm guitar performed at a slow, Blues-Rock style tempo. Vocally reminiscent of American singer and songwriter Lissie, you are hooked right from the first verse up to its’ loud and energetic finale, via the use of a thick bass, heavy, Hip-Hop sounding drums, similar to the kit used in Blur’s UK 1999 smash hit single “Tender,” and a distorted guitar riff which becomes so infectious that it takes over you so much to the extent that you are instantly craving more from the second “What I Need” comes to a close. Overall, it’s a masterfully accomplished piece of Rock music production, that what with its’ dirty, grungy vibe at times you’re not too sure whether to lapdance around a pole or head bang like you’re in a Punk Rock mosh pit.
When Ruen delivers her intense vibrato within her higher register, in the chorus section, on lines like “would you take it from me, cause’ you’ve got what I need” you are reminded of Lamb’s frontwoman Lou Rhodes and oddly enough a cross between Neneh Cherry’s trippy voice from the “Man” era and the gothic sound of Portishead’s Beth Gibbons, concluding that Ruen is definitely one of the most unique singers to come out of 2018 so far. But let’s not forget the most important bit…that “What I Need” showcases one hell of a catchy chorus that you will have on repeat for the rest of the year, and believe Rough Online when we say that you will hooked from the moment Ruen grabs you with the opening lyrics “now you tell me you’re ok, ok without me, that’s not what you told me when you were under my sheets.”
Ruen is without a doubt bringing back Rock N’ Roll masterfully, and it would be no surprise if her next single was a Rockabilly-style number with the utmost darkness, reminiscent of early Chris Isaak. She is a powerful musician, who guaranteed you will fall in love with the moment you hear her slightly raspy, distorted voice, which Rough Online love for its’ authentic and refreshing sound, and it would be no surprise if right now there were some very jealous people out there due to Ruen’s music…so take note my fellow musicians, because this is how Rock is nailed. All that is left to say is…Ruen…thank you for the music. Download and stream “What I Need” out now on all online stores.
