Royal Canoe definitely want to stand out from the rest of Experimental music acts in the industry for sure, clearly evidenced on their recent single “Rayz,” which showcases a style reminiscent of artists who have fused Gospel with blissful, Chillout beats such as when Macy Gray and Fat Boy Slim met up to release the 2001 single “Demons.” A psychedelic Indie song at its’ best, what with the Gospel-influenced choir who respond to the lyrics of lead singer Matt Peter’s edgy, Urban-style voice over a bizarre, space-like synth following the chord structure, a masterfully performed Bass line and a funky Soul beat, “Rayz” immediately grabs your attention from the first verse and throws you back to when Aloe Blacc broke out onto the mainstream music scene with the 2010 single “I Need A Dollar.”
However, Royal Canoe didn’t just stop there at grabbing your attention with an unusual musical style…of course they were going to throw a strange music video in there too, and they did not fail us with their uniqueness one bit, with the use of intriguing visuals of a man painted in yellow and gold from head to toe, observing everyday life as people stop and stare at his non-traditional image. And if you were wondering where one of the most unique tracks of 2018 has come from…it is from Royal Canoe’s new portfolio of work they have entitled “Waver,” their L.P that drops next year and yes…Rough Online can’t wait to hear it. There is no doubt in our minds that their forthcoming album will be a musically interesting experience. “Rayz” the new single is out now.
