ROUGH ONLINE | Exclusive | Interview

ROUGH ONLINE gave Laelia's new single "Television" a rave review last month, and the anticipated official music video for her best single to date has finally arrived, so of course we had to jump straight in there to find out where the industry's newest Synth Pop artist gets her inspiration from, as well as the singer's famous YouTube covers, and most importantly...fashion.

ROUGH ONLINE:  Prior to your recently released singles "Creatures" and "Television," which Rough Online absolutely love, you uploaded a huge portfolio of covers to YouTube. Our favourite is your stunning rendition of Green Day's "Basketcase." Which is your favourite cover to date? Which cover did you have the most fun recording?

LAELIA:  Yeah, I love to let my creativity run free and experiment with songs I absolutely love. It's so difficult to pick just one but I think the one that showcases my own personality and aesthetics the most is "Venus" by Shocking Blue/Bananarama. The recording and video shoot processes were both very fluid and natural. I like when the creative process is fluid. I also love my 80s version for "Million Reasons" by Lady Gaga... it's crazy... I love it!!

ROUGH ONLINE: Now, before we get straight onto "Television," let's talk Fashion. Rough Online find your image visually striking, especially after watching the music video for your Electro, Pop-Rock banger "Creatures." How would you describe your image and are there any fashion icons you look up to?

LAELIA:   I love fashion! Specially when combined with music it can send a powerful message. I love to have fun with colours and textures but also add a bit of darkness and mystery into the mix. I'd describe my image as a neon frenzy while floating in the darkness! For me Madonna was always an inspiration not only in music but in fashion. She's not afraid to take risks and be ahead of her time.

ROUGH ONLINE:  Getting onto the most important bit now...music, tell us who your musical heroes are? Which bands or singers were you listening to during the era that you knew you wanted to be a music artist?

LAELIA:  I grew up listening to 80s and 90s music. Specially strong female singers and performers such as Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Pat Benatar, Kate Bush and Gwen Stefani. It was around the early 2000's that I started to get obsessed with music and I'd spend hours and hours watching MTV and all those amazing music videos. I never ever thought I could be doing the exact same thing a few years later.

ROUGH ONLINE: Is there a debut E.P or L.P in the making right now?

LAELIA:   At the moment I'm focusing on singles but next year I will definitely work on an album. I can't wait to put a whole storyline together and make an LP... and videos. A bunch of experimental videos!

ROUGH ONLINE: You must be so excited for your fans to see the official music video for your single "Television." Tell us a bit about the inspiration behind the song and the visuals we will all finally get to see today.

LAELIA:   I seriously cannot wait to show everyone this video. It was a very special project made with a lot of passion, sweat and hard work. Television is a creative collaboration between me and producer/director Inu the Strange. We both designed the direction, production and script of the video. The story is a sequel to the eery "Creatures", my previous video in which you see me as an object of adoration. This time Inu portrays an obsessive admirer who does whatever it takes to satisfy his obsession with me.

I've always been a massive fan of horror movies and they are always my inspiration behind every video I create. With "Television" I wanted to dig deeper into the feeling I generated in "Creatures" and grow this little twisted universe. Inu is a very talented director and videographer. We have collaborated many times and he never fails to turn all my crazy ideas into reality".

ROUGH ONLINE:  Do you have any gig dates coming up? Is there a Tour planned?

LAELIA:   At this moment I'm creating, producing and rehearsing a brand new show to hit the road next year. I can't wait to perform this special project to all my fans all around the world
