ROUGH ONLINE
not only is impressed with the musicianship skills, notably his guitar playing, of Olivier St Louis, but it is also refreshing to hear a songwriter with such a soulful voice, whose tone throws us back to the raw yet emotional vocals of Jimi Hendrix, demonstrated on Olivier’s newest track “Wondering Wanderer.” He performs the catchiest guitar riff ROUGH ONLINE have heard since the magazine started, with your usual distortion effects that although get you in a slightly sexual, pole-dancing mood, also gives you a heads up for that anticipated energetic Rock N’ Roll chorus. The live drums that drop in, rhythmically in the vein of Sheryl Crow’s “Sweet Rosalyn” from her classic self-titled 1996 album, as well as the slick bass line, fills up the song nicely right up to the chorus which makes you naturally head bang around the room, to Olivier’s backing vocals sung in his higher register, head voice-style, with a very similar tone to Damon Alban’s unique vocal, specifically on his performances for Gorillaz.
Intentionally produced to ensure that “Wondering Wanderer” becomes increasingly heavier as the song moves along, the snare is doubled-up in the second verse so that no one takes a break from head-banging the way they did during its’ main hook. The chords are played on the guitar as a one-off strum every time the snare is hit, which gives the second verse a slight Reggae-feel which, along with Olivier’s memorable riff, keeps them legs moving. However, the lyrics are a clever contradiction to its’ fun, arse-shaking rhythm and polished Rock music production, while Olivier sings honest words like “maybe I’m a tyrant, a man of indifference” in the first verse or “I feel I’m afraid of being nothing.” Its’ as if this ridiculously talented musician, poetically, had an epiphany regarding himself and his surroundings, or even if these are merely random thoughts he wrote on paper, he blatantly wants to take us along for the ride, that musically wreaks of empowerment due to the strong qualities of “Wondering Wanderer.” Olivier St. Louis is without a doubt one of the most talented music artists ROUGH ONLINE has come across this year so far and we highly recommend you stream “Wondering Wanderer” out now on all online stores.
