Veteran DJ/producer Steve Angello
re-emerges from the smoke and laser lights of the club to bless us with two new tracks in anticipation of his forthcoming album Almost Human. First up, we get the rather uplifting "Rejoice."
Leaning heavily on the already powerful sermon of Reverend TD Jakes, Rejoice populates the track with organs, synths, and ambient sounds before a heavy drum pattern cuts in between pauses in Jakes' sermon.
So yeah, we have a slight dilemma with this one? Should we go hard in the paint and dance our brains out during those killer drum breaks or reflect about our lives when listening to Jakes' sermon. Three words: this is powerful.
Then there is the heavenly "Breaking Kind" featuring the sweet vocals of Paul Meany. Rather than go full speed ahead at 128 bpms, Angello opts for a more mid-tempo burner. The sound is refreshingly modern and current. Maybe it boasts nuances we usually attribute to Daft Punk and The Weekend. But this is still a very Steve Angello affair. "Breaking Kind" smolders and grooves handily. I predict this will generate the kind of commercial success for Angello in the months to come that will put him back in the mainstream conversation of pop stars.
