Sit back, rest your head, close your eyes and meditate to the bright, atmospheric sound of Platonick Dive’s new album “Social Habits.” Its’ nostalgic representation of 80’s Depeche Mode and Chris Isaak’s beautiful, rockabilly-style guitars will draw you in instantly, as well as the band’s relaxing, meditative vocals from “Waxfall” onwards. Despite their undeniably therapeutic, electro-rock sound, they do not shy away from keeping some mainstream qualities, such as the catchy synth melody on the chorus of “Habit,” which is easily comparable to the cropped vocal hook on Rita Ora’s “Anywhere.” Epic, skilled instrumentation can be heard on the Spanish-sounding guitars of “Maple,” while you are reminded of throwback indie rock on “Less Is More,” due to its’ mid-tempo drums and chilled, melancholic melodies.
However, Platonick Dive are not afraid to lead us into euphoric, 90’s dance territory on tracks like “Polaroids,” with its overuse of Trance-inspired keyboards, reminiscent of Greece 2000’s ‘99 hit “Three Drives,” while the warm synths in the instrumental sections of “Private Room,” takes us back to the music score of 1982’s Sci-Fi cult classic film Blade Runner.
“Social Habits,” takes you on an emotional journey, from the bittersweet to the positively energetic to the dark and slightly-angst to the Divine, if you let the music take you toward the spiritual plane it is meant to. It is a piece of art that deserves recognition from all new indie lovers who want to hear a current band paying tribute to throwback music production, which was once upon a time worshiped by well-renowned radio stations like XFM and Kiss 100.
