In ROUGH ONLINE's view…Mary Miller is the UK’s newest Trip-Hop sensation, who deserves critical acclaim for her distinctive sound, which is solely written and produced by herself, evidenced via her new single “HD.” Having previously reviewed her debut single “I Found Heaven” and watched a captivating performance by Miller at The Camden Assembly in London last month, we were desperate to hear more from Liverpool’s Electro newcomer. Surprisingly “HD” reveals the less darker side of the singer and songwriter, comparing her new single with its’ predecessor which delved straight into the gothic world of Portishead, whereas here we find Miller creating a musical world where “Bjork meets the ‘glittery’ 80’s.” However, Mary has not completely departed away from her Industrial-esque drum programming and haunting synths that she is known for, presented on this occasion via demonic, male choir voices singing the chords of HD’s opening. Pizzicato strings play an unusual melody to keep the tempo going nicely, before those enormous drums drop in, and when they do it is near enough the best beat of the year, mainly because of its’ impact from a stripped down chorus to a fierce, fiery world of Electronics.
Despite “HD” not being a Metal track, you will without a doubt find yourself head banging away to the beat from the very first kick, and the “reverse” echo effect at the end of her vocals in the first verse are bound to send a shiver down your spine, concluding that Mary Miller definitely as her own style, specifically in terms of her masterful production skills, which Rough Online applaud and are in the awe. She is a fearless artist, but it also feels as though creating such well-crafted experimental music comes natural to her and is purely effortless. It is safe to say that there is no one else like her in the UK at the moment and Rough Online can’t wait to hear her debut E.P “Fiction” out soon.
