she is known for her creative design silhouettes when it comes to her creating her men's designer wear. Now the London-based designer Martine Rose is in bed with one of the world's most influential sportswear giant Nike to create a capsule collection. The collaborative collection plays on the idea of distorted proportion in terms of sizes. Nike describes the collection as paying homage to the 'superhuman in the most human way'.
The collection consist f tracksuit and football jerseys and some reworked Nike Air Monarch t. It furthers goes to show how the British designer takes things are that appear ordinary and turns it into extraordinary or really exceptional. An attribute which has been part of her design ethos.
'When we started, we never just followed the rules, really because our access was blocked. For one reason or another, we had different ways to show. Basketball players are superhuman — their bodies have formed in different ways because of their profession. We looked at a lot of players and their proportions. We then re-imagined their clothes on average-size people. For example, if I were wearing one of their tracksuits, I would have to repurpose it in order to fit my proportions; I’d have to tuck the seams.”
To breath some commercial life into the collection Martine chose the Air Monarch for its Americaness and had to work closely with Nike in achieving. With that, they created a series of molds that comprised of synthetic stretched leather. Nike Foamposite is the only footwear created that has a similar construction.
''Collaborations are about communication. We wanted some of the forms to spill over the base and we wanted the heel on the outfit to be further out than the sole - things we were initially told couldn't be done. But everyone kept on pushing and we ended up developing these new shapes and ideas. Sportswear has been appropriated for years by various youth movements in England and America. The acceptability makes it so interesting. People can mix it in with any other type of wardrobe. I’m very interested in how people interact with clothes. It says so much about who they are, who they want to be. It’s an emotional thing,'' said Martine Rose
Even though the Nike & Martine Rose Collection is set to be launched in January 2019, Martine has ahead to release a secret collection on Craig List last week. Better to head over and check it out. But for those of you who like to wait till the general release on 15th January at Dover Street Market in London, Browns and some selected store around the world.
