ROUGH ONLINE have quite simply been left speechless by Hannah Grace’s music, presented in the form of her new single “Oh River,” which whilst delivering a similar musical vibe to Slow Moving Millie’s heart-wrenching 2011 cover of The Smiths’ “Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want,” also presents a visually emotional music video with real-life, everyday people in passing, answering the question “if you could relive or change any moment in your life, what would it be?” As you can imagine before watching, such a question evokes a diverse list of answers evidenced in one of the most simple yet well-thought up concepts Rough Online has seen to date, so it is only natural that you anticipate being in floods of tears by the end of such an emotive visual. Answers such as “I would go back to the moment I just moved out of home and I would make sure that my whole family knew that I loved them, because we just never said that (love) much as a family” and “I would be back with my wife again, she passed away,” and “being a child, because I miss being young and being free” and “my last memory of my dad, he died when I was about five and I just remember him sitting next to me on the floor playing the guitar” are just some of the answers given in Oh River’s music video, which on their own is enough to genuinely bring you close to crying your eyes out, because they are “real people” saying “real things” to a hand-held HD Camera that are easily relatable, making the visual authentic and Hannah’s listeners connect with her music, along with the most crucial element of this piece of art…her voice.
You are instantly thrown back to the singing of Hannah Reid from British, Dream Pop band London Grammar, the moment Grace kicks off “Oh River” with a slightly operatic vocal tone, containing controlled vibrato at the end of each line, over a simple chord structure played beautifully on the piano. The bridge section introduces pizzicato-style strings leading up to the chorus where a full orchestral section is thrown into the mix, alongside a memorable hook that chokes you up because of Hannah’s gaelic-esque singing that when reaching her higher register in head voice is quite simply stunning, an overall masterful piece of music production. And let’s not forget Grace’s pitch-perfect harmonies that soar and send shivers down your spine in the Middle 8, especially when hitting the octave up from the tonic key and the military-style drums played in the background, all together making it Oh River’s key, “dramatic” stand-out section, just before that captivating chorus drops in for one last time.
In short, Hannah Grace’s “Oh River” is one of the best songs Rough Online has ever heard from any genre, because Grace is a one-off talent with superb melodies and an unforgettable voice who has released a well-put together piece of musical gold, specifically due to the effective music production and skilled use of instrumentation, that takes you on an emotional journey, and which surely after the first listen will have you welling up. You would be crazy to not listen to one of the most talented singer and songwriters Rough Online has ever come across, so don’t miss out and download or stream Hannah Grace’s new single now.
