ROUGH ONLINE was not expecting this from the synth act at all, as when you compare the dark yet funky sounds heard on E.P 1, for instance, from the “Trilogy” era, which on tracks like “Disco Zombi Italia” sound like Rob Zombie, Martin Freeland AKA Man With No Name, and early Kraftwerk all fused together, new single “Beware The Beast,” takes you on a slightly different journey, with its’ overall tribute to 80’s rock bands, both musically and visually via the accompanying music video. Franck Hueso AKA Carpenter Brut, the musical man of mystery, whose identity has still been kept under wraps despite the constant releases, is usually known as an Electronic producer, whereas on his newest effort, he showcases a production full of overdrive, rhythm guitars, a Giorgio Moroder-style disco beat, and lead riffs which remind us of when The March Violets became slightly mainstream with the success of “Turn To The Sky” that all 80’s fanatics will remember from the Some Kind Of Wonderful soundtrack. Think of the slick, energetic, reverb-delay effected guitar melodies performed in the sexual scenes of 1985 classic Horror movie Fright Night, and you’re on the right track.
The key aspect of the song is Mat McNerney’s powerful vocal performance which he delivers with Meat Loaf-esque tones, giving the track the edge it needed to go fully in that Classic Rock direction, slightly reminiscent of Tahnee Cain & Tryanglz and their notable song from The Terminator soundtrack “Burnin’ In The Third Degree.” In a bizarre, but extremely clever way, it’s almost like listening to a Goth, male version of Celine Dion, as he dramatically sings “beware of the beast inside your heart, when we’re dancing in the dark, and the night’s desire is burning with the devil’s fire” and ROUGH ONLINE absolutely love it. Screamed at the top of Mat’s lungs as if he were singing to a sold-out stadium with no microphone, he ensured that the song received the drama its’ music deserved.
Beware The Beast’s music video does not shy away from Carpenter Brut’s intention to pay tribute to an era of Rock that has been long forgotten by many, unless you are a hardcore fan of Paul Stanley from KISS of course. It fuses vintage footage of gothic imagery, with a live performance of metal heads on stage so well, that what with the huge crazy hair do’s and gruesome effects, you are thrown right back to a combination of 80’s movies such as The Fly, Ghostbusters, and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. It’s a festival of horror treats worth the 3 minutes and 43 seconds of watching. ROUGH ONLINE highly recommend that you stream the memorable, catchy “Beware The Beast” as well as check out his new album “Leather Teeth” available now.
