Dream Pop act Polychrome are making music which, with the help of earthy, atmospheric synths and backing vocals on their new track “Synesthesia” containing enough reverb and delay to form a choir, on paper would usually uplift you to a positive state, but unexpectedly so, Oliver Price and Stephen Hodd have cleverly brought music “to bring you to tears” to the table with the use of superb, beautiful production and the help of Victoria Harrison’s whispery vocals and heartfelt lyrics. Opening with a piano melody that throws you back to the simple, yet intensely touching introduction section of Tom McRae’s “2nd Law,” 80’s-style, live-sounding drum programming drops in at the same time as Victoria’s melancholic voice, setting the ghostly, haunting scene perfectly, before its’ climatic build-up to the chorus, with the use of multiple kicks and hi hats.
The official music video for “Synesthesia” is a simple yet captivating piece of work, showcasing a rainbow of colours over close ups of the band members, while visually Victoria looks surprisingly reminiscent of Madonna’s beautiful, glittery image from the “Blonde Ambition” era of her career, while raindrops fall onto the camera lens, representing the emotion in the music extremely well. You could easily think of “Synesthesia” as a 21st century take on Madonna’s powerful 1986 ballad “Live To Tell” considering Polychrome’s use of 80’s influenced Pop-Rock production, delivered even more so in the song’s instrumental outro after the second chorus, which with its’ slick, Reverb-effected rhythm guitar playing and gorgeous use major to minor chords, throws us back to a John Shanks production, specifically his stunning work on Take That’s 2007 hit single “Rule The World.” Basically, Polychrome’s “Synesthesia” is one of the most beautiful songs ROUGH ONLINE have heard this year so far, and we highly recommend that you check out their new self-titled E.P out now.
