Review Written By Akil Wingate
Who knew melancholy could be such a sweetly lovely thing? Well in the more than capable hands of Russian DJ producer CHVRN Melancholy is the buzz single coming out of his new home at The Playground Records. In anticipation of his August EP release DROWNED, the young rising star has fashioned a stellar fusion between urban trap and electronic music. The result is what he refers to as witch house. But to our ears it is a moody melange of rough and sensual sounds brought toogether in a very nice magical potion he calls Melancholy.
For its part, the single is indeed melancholy, moody, sublimely wistful, dark and even listlessly sad. But it's also bright and brilliant with its urban affections, with its strong attack on the beat, with its killer synths that never go too hard in the paint, and a short enough span to keep you wanting more. This is the apetizer for a larger EP set he hopes to unleash upon an unwitting public in August's Indian Summer. Get ready.
Our verdict? It's sexy. For all of the disfunction of the moodiness and the crazy contrast between hardcore beats and hardcore hopelessness, this is beautifully rendered music. Melancholy is dope as f*%$. Don't want to take my word for it?
