ROUGH ONLINE | Music | Review

Apart from Avril Lavigne’s powerful single “Head Above Water” there haven’t been many other singers who have appeared out of nowhere from taking a long break from the music scene. However, one that ROUGH ONLINE have labelled as “the perfect comeback” is Barbra Streisand’s new single, which opens with an emotive, minor chord structure on a beautifully played, filtered piano, throwing you back to the early career of Birdy and creating a haunting atmosphere even before Streisand’s vulnerable voice drops. And just as you thought “Don’t Lie To Me” maybe a personal statement to an ex-lover, while feeling captivated by Barbra’s operatic vocals in the chorus sections which instantly remind you of why the people fell in love with her in the first place, you soon find out that the meaning behind these words are a lot more deeper than you expected after watching Streisand’s self-directed and edited music video to accompany this brilliant track. Visuals of African Americans, including America’s former president Barack Obama, crying their eyes out, references of the “me-too” movement and images of political protests fused with the face of Donald Trump ensure that Barbra’s obvious intentions for her new single are known to all listeners, and ROUGH ONLINE love one of Brooklyn’s musical heroines for her fearlessness to make a stand and present her views on the current state of America so candidly in the form of Don’t Lie To Me’s official music video.

The main hook of Streisand’s new single will throw you back to Anastacia’s 2004 single “Sick and Tired” the moment the beat drops and if Celine Dion ever decided to take her music in a slightly political direction it would probably sound a little something like this…powerful, moving and just an overall solid track which has blown most music critics and her fans away, and we wouldn’t expect anything less from one of the greatest Divas of all time. Barbra…your vocals are still just as uniquely emotional as they were when you first became one of the biggest names in the music industry, and “Don’t Lie To Me” also deserves an applause for its’ superb and honest lyrical moments such as “Can’t you see we’re crying, where’s the new horizon?” Barbra Streisand’s new album “Walls” drops on November 2nd. Download and stream the new single “Don’t Lie To Me” out now.
