One of Grunge’s most respected and well renowned bands from the late 80’s when they originally formed are back after a 5 year hiatus with their new album “Rainier Fog,” a follow up to the Billboard hit album “The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here,” and despite complacent, radio-friendly Pop and Rock trends, Alice In Chains have stayed true to their famously dark, Heavy Metal sound that garnered their positive reputation and universal acclaim from contemporary music critics from the start of their career, showcased on recent singles “Never Fade” and “So Far Under.”
“Never Fade” progresses from a strictly Minor Chord structure in the verses to a mixture of Major and Minor in the chorus sections, which helps deliver an unexpectedly touching emotion to the song, also felt in Jerry Cantrell’s famous raspy voice which throws us back to the days of 90’s Alternative bands like Pearl Jam, as he powerfully sings “never fade, I know you think you’re something I forgot, never fade, I’m everything you really think I’m not,” delivered via one of the most memorable Rock hooks Rough Online have heard this year so far. And of course, an Alice In Chains track would not be the same without a masterfully composed guitar solo in Never Fade’s instrumental Middle 8 section, performed by the man himself.
To continue the band’s relentless aspiration to get your head banging to their known aggressive sound “So Far Under,” takes you on a different trip to “Never Fade,” as its’ slightly muted, opening guitar section and heavy, mid-tempo live drums was blatantly created to throw you in at the deep end of the messiest mosh pit going, and make your body bang as low to the floor as you can possibly get. And no one can ignore the sliding, dirty overdriven guitar riffs performed in the chorus, as well as William DuVall’s gritty, demonic vibrato, a similar tone to Marilyn Manson’s unusual vocal style and Cantrell’s reverb-effected lead guitar solo just before So Far Under’s finale. These two masterfully written and produced songs, that remind us of the band’s high standard of musicianship skills, have got Rough Online more than just fired up to hear Alice In Chains’ brand new body of work. “Rainier Fog” is out now on download and streaming from all online stores.
